Dr. Ranjit Kumar Baruah started his life as an artist at the age of nine with a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. Ranjit Kumar Baruah, M.Sc. (Agri), Ph.D. retired professor of Assam Agriculture University.
In his studio lies hidden a series of retrospective and contemporary works of art, which tell of times gone by, of things obsolete and contemporary- the clash of cultures, of floods and devastation caused by terror.
He has sculpted the lad who goes to the fields to bring back paddy sheaves on his shoulders using a bamboo pole only when his beloved was working in the field.
Another sculpture is of the image he witnessed while returning from school every day. A woman would place cakes of dried dung mixed with other material on three bamboo sticks in a pond at twilight, careful not to disturb the fish.
The dhulia (drummer) with his unique pose and Bihu dancers entwined together as one entity and dancing to the shrill notes of the pepa like a snake dancing to the notes of a snake-charmer, among others, make up his compositions.
Earlier, Baruah had made sculptures of Lachit Borphukan which were installed in Guwahati, Silarai, which was installed on the road to Tezpur and Mahatma Gandhi’s statues installed in Golaghat and Gandhi Park, Jorhat. Copies of a huge oil painting of Srimanta Sankaradeva in his house, has been put up in conferences held in the US, Britain and France. His 40 portraits of renewed personalities of the region are hanging in the portrait gallery of the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
Dr. Baruah has created over 6,000 paintings (oil) and subjective paintings (oil and acrylic). He also has created subjective sculpture (fibre glass), portrait statues (fibre glass) and relief arts- statue of brass/bronze/fibre glass. Which have been displayed all over the world. Many such portraits like those of Kushal Konwar, K.K. Handique Jagannath Barooah and others put up in institutes and auditoriums.
Portrait of Srimanta Sankaradeva (oil on canvas) is probably the greatest contribution of Dr. Baruah. Recently he has completed a huge 7feet statue of saint Srimanta Sankaradeva.
